"These papers were selected and refined through a refereeing process from talks given in August 1992 at the Quadrennial Meeting of the International Study Group on the Relations between History and Pedagogy of Mathematics (HPM) at the University of Toronto and the Seventh International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME) at Université Laval in Quebec City as well as a subsequent call to historians of mathematics for papers by the editor. HPM arranges conferences for mathematics teachers who wish to incorporate materials from the history of mathematics in the classroom to motivate students and deepen their understanding of mathematics, and it fosters related publications. Its conferences, which research mathematicians and historians also attend, address topics in the history of mathematics and pedagogical issues, the cultural contextualist approach to problem solving, and experiences with historical problems in the classroom."--Foreword.
